How-to for the thing you can do

Brief

You can already do something most people cannot: solve a cube, restring a guitar, fold a fitted sheet, whip a merengue. Write the guide, with a photo you took at every step. Writing instructions for a beginner is harder than doing the thing, because you have to notice everything your hands do automatically. The test is whether a novice can follow it without calling you.

Personalize

• The skill. Something you can demonstrate on camera today, with a clear start state and finish state. If you have several, pick the one people have asked you to teach.
• Your tester. Name one person who cannot do the thing and will attempt it using only your guide.
• The step everyone botches. You know where beginners go wrong. That step gets extra photos and its own warning.

Milestones

1. A rough step list live at a URL, day one, no photos.
2. Photo shoot: do the thing slowly, shooting every step, redoing shots that came out unclear.
3. Full write-up: numbered steps, one photo each, a what-you-need list at the top.
4. A troubleshooting section for the two or three most common ways it goes wrong.
5. The tester attempts it from the guide alone while you watch silently and take notes. Fix every stumble.
6. Phone styling and final README.

Done means

• Live URL responding; steps followable on a phone
• Every step has a photo you took, in the order performed
• Tester attempt written up in the README, with the fixes it caused
• A troubleshooting section drawn from your own failed attempts
• At least 8 commits across at least 5 distinct days, authored by you
• SESSIONS.md has an entry per session, written by you
